Artificial Vision

Those who had lost their vision can regain it with the help of the latest discovery in technology. The technique of artificial vision is now introduced. The researchers has worked in this field and introduced a microchip made of silicon to give you the power of vision. Dr Mark Humayun has contributed greatly to the research in the field for creating an artificial vision.

Even if the retina of a person is damaged, there is a chance for the person to regain his sight. The scientists have found out that if the nerve ganglia are stimulated with mild electricity the person will be able to see the light. The images and the electric pulse thus generated can be translated with the help of a device to create vision. The device is called the artificial silicon retina (ASR). This device is developed by the Optobionics. This is a very small device having only 2mm diameter. This device is made very small and it is thinner than human hair. This extreme structure is made because it should be placed inside the most delicate organ, the eye. This should be very carefully placed in the eye without causing any disruption to the functioning of the eye. Dr Mark Humayun was leading the Department of Energy's creation of this ARP (Artificial Retina Project).

Vision Problem

This artificial retina contains about three thousand five hundred solar cells. These cells will generate electric pulses from the light the device receive. With the help of a surgery this device can be placed in the eye of a person. Generally the light entering into the eye is falling on the retina. Here the artificial retina will get the power it needs to function from the light entering into the eye. The researches are demanding that the person keeping this device can see the images of about ten by ten pixels.
